TCS Board supports auditorium plans, reviews updates

[TIFFIN, Ohio, Sept. 28, 2026] - The Tiffin City Schools Board of Education expressed support for moving forward with Columbian High School auditorium improvements, heard updates on academic progress and technology services and approved student-support agreements during its Sept. 28 meeting.

Auditorium improvements

Superintendent Greg Williamson presented a proposal from Energy Optimizers, USA for auditorium lighting, controls and electrical improvements. The written proposal totals $549,420. A previously designated $250,000 donation from Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital would cover part of the cost, leaving approximately $300,000 to fund.

Williamson said the district is exploring grants and other contributions for the remaining cost. The proposed work includes updated electric work, lighting controls and staff training. Board members expressed support for moving forward with the project.

“I’m hopeful that we could do this project with all donated money,” Williamson said.

Academic progress

Williamson reviewed the district’s 2025-26 Ohio School Report Card. TCS improved its overall rating from 3 to 3.5 stars, meeting state standards overall. Five of the district’s six rated components now meet or exceed state standards.

He highlighted gains in student growth and Gap Closing, including academic growth among students with disabilities in English language arts and math. District leaders will continue reviewing the results to guide instructional planning. Read the district’s report-card summary.

Technology services

Williamson said district leaders reviewed staff feedback on technology support earlier Monday as part of their evaluation of services. The survey addressed response times and staff support. He expects to bring technology service agreements to the Board in October following continued work with Northern Buckeye IT.

Student services

The Board approved a parent mentor program contract with North Central Ohio Educational Service Center, not to exceed $25,000. Williamson said a federal grant will cover the cost. The program supports families whose children have individualized education programs.

The Board also approved student-service agreements with High Road School of Bucyrus and the Seneca County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Other actions included the hiring of Tony Vasko as Columbian’s head varsity softball coach.

Community support

The Board accepted $9,088.52 in donations, grants and in-kind support. Contributions included 1,400 webcam covers valued at $3,000 from Sisters in Shelter, a $2,050 grant from the Tiffin Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council for the Tiffin Middle School Hygiene Closet and $1,500 from Seneca VFW Post 2858 for TMS’ positive behavior support program.

Additional gifts supported sensory activities, classroom materials, Power of the Pen, school supplies and staff appreciation.
